Driveline & Driveshaft Modifications

There are a number of different reasons you might require a driveline or driveshaft modification. The most common reason is that you want to tow a side-by-side or four-wheel drive vehicle behind your RV. In order to do this safely, your vehicle will require some modifications to the driveline.

Driveshaft Disconnect

On some vehicles, a driveshaft disconnect will  allow you to flat tow your vehicle. First, we take some measurements on your existing driveshaft. Then a whole new driveshaft is made for your vehicle. This driveshaft has a special yoke on the end with a collar that slides, connecting or disconnecting the end of the drive shaft.

Lube Pump

Some vehicles require a Lube Pump to be flat towed.  The Lube Pump is a pump that is added in under the hood of your vehicle and it circulates the transmission fluid keeping the gears lubricated as you pull the vehicle.

As of October 2020 the Lube Pump has been discontinued and there is no know option to replace it for making front wheel drive vehicles flat towable.

The Right Modifications for Towing Your Car

Many manual transmission cars can be flat towed without any modifications, and you can tow any front-wheel-drive manual transmission vehicle as far as you want and as long as you want. If the car has an automatic transmission that is lubricated by the output shaft, it can also be flat towed with no problem.

However if your automatic transmission car is lubricated by the input shaft of the transmission, you will need an auxiliary method such as a lubrication pump that is controlled by the ignition of the motorhome, to keep the cooling fluids circulating while you are towing.

Some RVers who travel a long distance before using their car at their destination disconnect the drive shaft to uncouple the transmission from the differential at the rear wheels. This is where Smitty's RV & Welding can help out, our experienced technicians will make sure the right modifications are completed correctly and in a timely manner with expert precision. Can't believe how honest and accommodating Smitty's RV & Welding is. Not only is their work top notch, but when i did something to damage the tow system they installed on my car, they fixed my mistake which would have cost me over $300 and didn't even charge me. They go out of their way to help.
